Birthday dinners come but once a year and should be as memorable as they are delicious. While restaurants are aplenty, a birthday deserves that little something extra… Be adventurous and try something new.
Here are some birthday dining bests in southwest Minneapolis and Edina. Whatever you do, end with an indulgent dessert. Candles and song are optional.
The Border’s trilogy of Italian restaurants dominate the intersection of 50th and Penn. Arrive early to beat daily lines.
Broders’ Cucina Italiana: Get a takeout of authentic Italian and eat along the hilly shores of Lake Harriet, just four blocks north. Broders’ has built a base over 25 years and it all started at the deli-cucina.
Broders’ Pasta Bar: Check out the vine covered, shady European-style patio for wine, beer and appetizers. Then go inside and enjoy housemade pasta served with seasonal touches. Ask for extra shredded cheese. It’s your day!
Terzo: A more modern take on Italian cuisine bridges creative fusion with Mediterranean traditions. The art of pasta culminates in the housemade Tajarin with porcini ragu and sage butter.
Grand Café: Nationally award-winning French fare makes for a grand night out. Even non-Francophiles will say, “Ooo la la!” (Reservations advised and closed Mondays).
Revival: Southern-style fried chicken, fried tomatoes, biscuits and pie: Dixie delights with no pretense (and no drama) ensure an experience better than Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler’s barbeque. The cozy dining room fills up fast and the on-street parking’s a challenge.
Cahill Bistro: For some Latin food love, head to the strip mall among office parks in southwest Edina. A Guatemalan family puts together empanadas, tacos and other Latin mainstays with a twist. The paved trails in nearby Lewis Park are a lovely place to walk off the meal.
