Edina has more cake than ever. Cocoa & Fig opened a store in the Yorkdale Shoppes by Southdale in mid-October. The new location is a sister to the original retail outlet at Gaviidae Common in downtown Minneapolis. The Edina shop and catering center features a top-quality, made from scratch, dessert selection that goes beyond cake.
It’s like being a kid in the sweet factory showroom. Decadent desserts, rainbows of pastels and glittery touches adorn every turn similar to a fashion-forward catered wedding. Nice, especially on a cold, lifeless gray Minnesota fall day.
Sugar for the eyes and the taste buds makes for a glorious awakening. Try a macaron, cake pop, cupcake or cookie sandwich. Save a treat for later or better yet, share your bounty with family and friends.
The macarons have a light as angel dust texture brought down to earth by a pillow of buttery frosted filling. Each macaroon is formed from two flawlessly balanced wheels of meringue confection. A creamy symmetrical slather of frosting is the glue that holds everything together. Sugary flavors extract from the meringue with every bite.
Cake Pop Curiosities
Food on a stick smacks of true Minnesotan sensibility. Cake pops are elegant enough for the grandest gathering, yet oh so neatly portable. No crumbs. A thick coating of almost candy bar quality frosting encases each round bombe. Break through the delightfully waxy coating and bite into a heavy, stick to your teeth cake that almost tastes like brownie dough. Forests of cake pops grouped together on stands are beauty to behold.
Yes, they taste as heavenly as they look. While I was slow to jump on the cake pop band wagon, I am now converted.
The gild is not gold but cake — cupcakes to be precise. Cocoa & Fig has a dizzying assortment of cupcake creations. Choices are many and selections are a sweet challenge from a dessert menu that changes daily.
The pink champagne cupcake boasting a bit of bubbly is my favorite. Strawberry champagne buttercream graces the top of the cupcake like a royal hat. Pearls of snowy white nonpareils bejewel the finish.
